Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost - October 20, 2024

Off to Uganda

On Friday morning, fourteen Epiphany members will be boarding a plane for the country of Uganda in central Africa. We'll be gone for almost two weeks. Our trip isn't a mission trip. Instead we are thinking of it as a pilgrimage.

Our goal is to see what God is doing through Uganda Christian University, (UCU) which Epiphany has supported for twenty years. In that time, UCU has grown from a small school attached to an Anglican seminary, to a full fledged university with 15,000 students and multiple campuses. It has stayed committed to its central mission: "To Equip students for productive, holistic lives of Christian faith and service." Your giving to Epiphany has played a consistent part in all of this over the years as we have supported UCU through our missions budget. It is exciting for us to be able to go see UCU in person and also to be guests at their fall graduation.

While we are in Uganda, we will also have many opportunities to meet and interact with fellow Christians from another part of the world. My hope is that we all bring back to Epiphany a broader view of God's church and more intimate knowledge of some of our brothers and sisters in Jesus.

Please pray for all of us who are on this journey over the next two weeks. Pray we travel swiftly, that we are kept safe from sickness and disease, and that we have our eyes and hearts open to encounter God in Africa.

My prayer is that we return to Epiphany with stories of God's work and God's people in Uganda!

God bless,

Three Things on November Third

Don't forget to put three things on your calendar:  All Saints Sunday is Nov. 3.  We will be remembering and giving thanks for those who have died in the past year.  If you would like to include someone in our prayers that Sunday, please put their name on the list in the fellowship hall or contact Mtr. Pamela (pmeeks@epiphanyanglican.net).   Annual meeting is also on November 3.  Plan to stay and hear about the church while we elect a new vestry.  Finally, we end Daylight Saving Time on Nov. 3 as well.  Our clocks fall back!

Pop-Up Pet Blessing Pictures

Epiphany goes out into the neighborhood to bless pets and meet people in honor of St. Francis every October. This year we held our pop-up pet blessing in Debby and Ralph's driveway in Chantilly. We met blessed and prayed with many pets and their owners. Photos are here.

Welcome John Migila and Shade on Sunday

We welcome John Migila, the Shade Tanzania Director, to preach for us at both services this Sunday, Oct. 20.  Claire Fedele, the founder and executive director of Shade, will also be us. Shade cares for children with albinism in Tanzania, where they face danger and persecution. We are excited to hear directly from Shade's leaders on Sunday. You can learn more about Shade's work here. All loose (undesignated) offerings will go towards Shade’s ministry.  You will be able to use the Church Center App to give as well. Designate Mission & Outreach-Guest Speaker.

How to Find a (Real) Hero

Next Coates food delivery November 4

We will make our next delivery to the food pantry at Coates Elementary School on Monday, November 4. We especially need donations of foods such as beans, rice, and pasta as well as canned tuna, chicken, and vegetables. Cash donations can also be made, specifying Coates. Any questions? Contact Sally Eckard (sseckard@verizon.net) or Melanie Kobos (melkobo@yahoo.com).

Pumpkin Carving Event Oct. 27

Back by popular demand, we are hosting a pumpkin carving fun night for you & your friends. Join us Sunday, October 27 from 6:30pm-8:00pm here in our fellowship hall. Signup here. This is a relaxed and fun event & we will have pumpkins to paint for the younger children. We provide one pumpkin for each child so it is important that you sign up using our app or in person so we have enough pumpkins for the kids. Bring chips or dessert to share. This is not a dinner event. Direct questions to: (pmeeks@epiphanyanglican.net).

Handbell Choir Welcoming New Members

Now is the perfect time to start ringing handbells with us! We will have a few members out on travel over the coming weeks, so we’d like to invite YOU to come see what this is all about. All our ringers started with no experience, but now we are skilled and able to offer beautiful music. We rehearse following the Sunday 10:15 service in the music room (behind the altar and choir area). Questions? Ask Brad Johnson (bravhorn22@aol.com) or any of the bell ringers you happen to see after church!

Thanksgiving Food Drive Begins

Epiphany is helping WFCM with their holiday food drives again this year.  We have committed to packing 25 boxes for the Thanksgiving food drive.  WFCM will have a drive through event in late November with the goal of 1200 boxes.

Here is the signup link for the Thanksgiving groceries we need.

You can also help by donating cash and we’ll buy what’s needed.  Use the app and select ‘Holiday Food’ or write a check payable to Epiphany with ‘Holiday Food’ specified in the menu. Any remaining funds will be donated to WFCM.

Food & cash should be dropped off at Epiphany by Sunday, November 17.

If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Hanger at zaboom@verizon.net or 202-436-1686.
