Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost - October 6, 2024

Vestry Elections are Nov. 3

Anglicans believe leading a local church is a team effort. I and Epiphany's other clergy are Epiphany's spiritual shepherds (biblically speaking, elders). We are responsible for leading worship, providing pastoral care, and helping all of us learn and grow as Christians. Alongside us is a group of temporal shepherds, called the vestry. This group of ten Epiphany members sets the annual budget, takes responsibility for the operations of the church, and serves as a council of advice for the clergy. In the absence of the rector (me) the leader of the vestry (the senior warden) is senior lay officer of the church. Qualifications to serve on the vestry include being a mature Christian confirmed or received as an Anglican who maintains an active life of prayer and study of Scripture, is known and respected in the congregation, is active in ministry at Epiphany, and is a cheerful giver of time, talent and treasure (qualifications in full are available as part of our diocesan canons here on page 27). Vestry terms are three years. The vestry has a regular meeting once a month (generally on the second Tuesday night) and is elected at Epiphany's annual meeting each November.

This year's annual meeting is Sunday, Nov. 3. Vestry nominations are now open. If you would like to nominate someone to serve on the vestry, or would like to explore serving on vestry yourself, please contact Jon Crane, who is the chair of the Nomination Committee. This year, we have four open vestry positions.

God bless,

Guest Preacher This Sunday

This Sunday, October 6, Fr. Peter is excited to welcome his youngest brother, U.S. Army Chaplain (Captain) Ben Frank, who will preach at both the 8 and 10:15am services.  Chaplain Frank currently serves at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) where he is the chaplain for the training cadre and students at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School.

Welcome to the Family Theo and Darcy!

Last Sunday we welcomed Theodore Seroka and Darcy Walraven to God's family through baptism. Congratulations to Epiphany's newest members. May we all keep the vows we have made to support them in their life in Christ!

Coffee Hour Set-Up: Still Seeking Help

Our efforts to identify help with coffee hour on Sunday are off to a bit of a slow start. Would you consider stepping forward?  Each Sunday Epiphany provides food for coffee hour and many of us gather together to talk and build relationships after the service.  We need people who can take that provided food, plate it up, and place it on the coffee hour food counter before the 10:15am service begins.  Then, when coffee hour is complete, clean up. Right now, this work is being done by Epiphany's clergy and staff, which is challenging when there are activities between the services like adult education.  If you, or your group, would be willing to do this one Sunday every month or two, contact Deacon Sally (shoover@epiphanyanglican.net) to learn more.

Outsiders In, Insiders Out, and Amputation

Coates Food Pantry

Thanks to your donations we were able to make our second delivery of food to the Coates Elementary School food pantry this Friday. Please continue to bring donations for our November delivery and place them in the bin by the receptionist’s desk. We especially need foods such as beans, rice, and pasta as well as canned tuna, chicken, vegetables, soups and stews. Cash donations can also be made, specifying Coates. Any questions? Contact Sally Eckard (sseckard@verizon.net) or Melanie Kobos (melkobo@yahoo.com).

Neighborhood Pet Blessing On Saturday

Bring your dog, cat, fish or weasel (if you have a weasel) to Epiphany’s neighborhood pet blessing in the Morris’ front lawn on Saturday, Oct. 5, anytime between 8 and 10:30am.  The Morris home is at 13541 Point Pleasant Drive in Chantilly, 20151.

Senior Lunch October 16

The next seniors’ 50%-off luncheon will be at the I-HOP on Metrotech Drive on Wednesday, October 16, the third Wednesday of the month.  We will meet just once a month for the remainder of this calendar year. If anyone has questions, call Vonda Sines at 703-850-1230.

Pumpkin Carving Event Oct. 27

Back by popular demand, we are hosting a pumpkin carving fun night for you & your friends. Join us Sunday, October 27 from 6:30pm-8:00pm here in our fellowship hall. Signup here. This is a relaxed and fun event & we will have pumpkins to paint for the younger children. We provide one pumpkin for each child so it is important that you sign up using our app or in person so we have enough pumpkins for the kids. Bring chips or dessert to share. This is not a dinner event. Direct questions to: (pmeeks@epiphanyanglican.net).
