By Sheila Mentzer on behalf of the Outreach Committee
Epiphany and other local churches are partnering with WFCM (Western Fairfax Christian Ministries) to collect backpacks for local children who otherwise would not have one when school begins in a few weeks. This is a coordinated effort designed to assist students who are on free or reduced lunch programs and to make sure that they receive the backpacks and school supplies necessary to start the new school year.
This year we will be supporting Stone Middle School in Centreville. We have committed to collect 50 backpacks. Hopefully, with God’s help, we will be able to make it to the full 75 they actually need and have asked for. The drive will be on from now through Sunday, August 18. There is a box for backpacks at the entryway of the church by the welcome desk. The collected backpacks need to be delivered to the school by the deadline, Monday the 19.
Hints from the County program coordinator for middle school needs are listed below. HOWEVER…PLEASE NOTE that I just received an update directly from Stone Middle School and they are requesting backpacks of 18-19” or larger for their students.
1. Backpacks of 17 inches or larger with at least 2 zippered compartments.
2. Unisex colors and patterns preferable.
3. Some places to purchase the backpacks follows…but be on the lookout for sales!
a) Costco, High Sierra Backpack with laptop sleeve/compartments, $17.99
b) Target, Jansport Supermax backpack, Size 17in h x 12.5in w x 8.25in d, $34.99

Epiphany has been there to help these children in need through this program for many years now. I am confident that God will help us find a way to be there for them again. If you don’t have the time to shop, you can either give a check to me or to Janice Monaghan, or put one in the collection plate on Sundays, payable to Church of the Epiphany and marked “for backpacks”. I will gladly do the shopping for you and all your contributions are tax deductible.
THANK YOU SO MUCH and GOD BLESS YOU. If you have any questions, please call me, Sheila Mentzer @ 703-860-4377 or 571-271-9689 (my cell) or you can email me.
