This Sunday, we will hear the story of Jesus’ first miracle – turning water into wine at a country wedding (John 2.1-11).
In some ways, it is such a small beginning – taking care of a catering crisis. But in so many other ways, this little moment tells us so much about who Jesus is and how we can relate to him.
This is what it tells us. First, this miracle makes it absolutely clear that Jesus cares about the small stuff in our lives. He cares about catering crises. He cares about our sick pets and work anxieties. In short, Jesus cares about us.
Second, the miracle at Cana shows us the incredible generosity of Jesus. You may remember what the master of the feast says when he tastes the wine Jesus made, “you have kept the good wine until now” (John 3.10). But have you ever noticed just how much wine Jesus made? It’s a big number, 120-180 gallons, or 600-900 modern wine-bottles worth. Jesus not only solves a problem, but his solution is of the best quality and comes in great abundance.
Friends, what do you need from Jesus today? Bring that need to him in your prayers. Jesus cares about the needs (big and small) of normal people like us. Jesus is more generous than we can imagine.
God bless,
